PhD Thesis : Path and wake of freely rising/falling bodies and their intercation with vortex ring

In environmental and industrial flows involving dispersed two-phase flows, the interaction of a freely moving body (solid or gaseous) with vortical fluid structures (generated for instance by the unsteady wakes of other bodies) gives rise to a wide range of behaviors that need to be better understood, characterized and modeled. These include, for instance, the capture and entrainment of the body by the vortex, rotation, deformation and even fragmentation in the case of bubbles (see illustration below). The interaction may also lead to the destabilization and destruction of the vortex due to the body passage. To investigate these phenomena, it is necessary to achieve a 3D reconstruction and tracking of the body pose (position, orientation and possible deformation), and to determine at the same time the spatio-temporal evolution of the surrounding liquid flow field.
