This IUTAM Symposium is intended to focus on the important problem of flow separation.
It aims to achieve a unified approach which will regroup the knowledge coming from theoretical, experimental, numerical simulation and modelling aspects for separated unsteady flows in incompressible and compressible flow regimes. It will attempt to bring together groups of researchers working on the problems related to the understanding and the prediction of unsteady, separated flows. The meeting will address physical aspects of the dynamics related to unsteady separation in incompressible flows and under compressibility effects. It will present the state of the art of methods for modelling this kind of flow at high Reynolds numbers. The physical understanding of these aspects in this class of flows remains a serious problem for the purpose of efficient turbulence modelling in engineering applications, including Aerodynamics and Aeroelasticity for aeronautics, space and land vehicles. The Symposium will start on Monday, 8 April 2002 , and will end on Friday, 12 April. It will consist of single plenary sessions with invited lectures (45 minutes), selected oral presentations (20 minutes), discussions on special topics and posters.
Symposium languages:
Official languages for the Symposium are French and English
The main objectives on which the present symposium focuses are listed below:
- Theoretical aspects of flow separation and analytical approaches
- Instability and Transition studies related to the onset of separation and to its control
- Experimental techniques for a better understanding of the dynamics of separation
- Compressibility effects related to unsteady separation
- Direct Numerical Simulation of unsteady separated flows
- Turbulence modelling approaches adapted to the physics of unsteady separation; LES, RANS and hybrid approaches
Program
The detailed program of the symposium is now available.
Please note that slight modifications are still possible.

Toulouse, capital of the Midi-Pyrénées region, is the city of Aeronautics and Space and therefore an important centre of higher education, research and high tech industries. The Symposium will be held in ENSEEIHT, the 'Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Electrotechnique, d'Electronique, d'Informatique, d'Hydraulique de Toulouse'. The 'Institut de Mécanique des Fluides de Toulouse', IMFT, is a research Institute directly linked to this engineering school.
ENSEEIHT is in the centre of Toulouse (10 mn walk from the Capitole).
(See 'ACCOMODATION' for a General Toulouse Map of Toulouse)
At the beginning of the symposium, the abstracts will be available as well as a CD-Rom with the full papers. Authors are kindly requested to send their contribution (in pdf format if possible) before 4th January '02 according to the provided model (Word/pdf model for oral presentation, Word/pdf model for poster presentation). The full papers have to be send to iutam2002_imft@imft.fr.A number of selected authors will be asked to submit a full paper for publication in a dedicated volume of the Journal 'Flow, Turbulence and Combustion'.

Advanced reservation at the selected hotels will end on February 28th.
We confirm that the period of the Symposium corresponds to holidays in France, and that Toulouse is a popular destination welcoming a great number of visitors in April. We strongly recommend you to make and/or confirm your hotel reservation as soon as possible. Otherwise you may be faced with difficulties in finding lodging.
Participants are asked to organise their lodging. A list of Hotels is furnished (special rates). A number of pre-reserved rooms is available until 15 February. Please book your hotel before this date. Toulouse is a highly appreciated city, especially during the symposium period which coincides with the students easter holidays.

The symposium is organised by the 'Institut de Mécanique des Fluides de Toulouse (IMFT)', affiliated with the french 'Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique', the 'Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse' and the 'Université Paul Sabatier'.
The symposium benefits from the general services of IMFT: Network and computing systems (J. P. Bombaud), Signal-Image Processing (J.F. Alquier), Reprography (J. Rambouil), Numerical simulation software (G. Bacon, A. Stoukov), Administration (J. Levent) and Accounting services of the INPT (C. Cervera).
